The Course:

A Written (Part 1), Driving (Part 2) and then Teaching (Part 3) exams are what you need to pass to qualify as a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor. Each stage requires preparation and meeting DVSA standards. Your progress and results depend on your skills, study and practice.

All exams have to be taken in series – so you have to take and pass the Part 1 before taking the Part 2 etc. You will only have 3 attempts at both the part 2 and part 3, failing for a 3rd time in either part 2 or 3 will mean you have to wait 2 years before you may start again.

We encourage students to start the in-car driving and pupil teaching training as soon as you start on the course with a training schedule agreed around your progress and test availability

After passing Part 2, you may be eligible to apply for a six-month trainee licence. This requires at least 40 hours of instructional training with a qualified ADI, including at least 10 hours in a car, and meeting the other DVSA requirements. A licence is not automatic after training. Check the current trainee licence rules on GOV.UK.

Course Outline:
  • Training for the Part 1 Written multiple choice exam includes Home study + weekly in car sessions
  • Training for the Part 2 Driving exam is “in car” practical driving lessons from our trainers.
  • Training for the Part 3 Teaching exam is a combination of theory and practical “in-car” teaching sessions – normally we would start you off on the in car sessions when you start your Part 1 training.
  • Induction training takes place when you have passed your Driving Exam to prepare you to start work under a Trainees licence
  • When you start up under a Trainee Licence we give you further weekly “in car” training, as agreed in your training package and within the applicable trainee licence rules

We aim to support you through the qualification process. Before enrolling, confirm the training hours, support provided and terms for any additional training.

The big question, How much will I earn?

Driving instructor earnings vary with lesson demand, the hours you teach, your lesson rates and running costs. Lesson income is turnover rather than take-home pay. Allow for vehicle costs, insurance, fuel, franchise fees, travel time, cancellations, holidays and tax when planning your income. We can discuss the practicalities of working as an instructor, but cannot guarantee earnings.
